I wondered for awhile if the new DiCaprio movie was going to be over the top weird or if it had more rhyme and reason than the trailer showed. I am happy to say that there was plenty of rhyme and reason. Inception was directed by Christopher Nolan and starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page. I was also happy to see a few more recognizable faces as the movie played on.
I was glad that I heeded this advice and I now pass it on to whoever reads this.
I had heard that I should try to not read to much about it, go into the theater with a clear mind and then sit back and go with the flow. I was able to do so and thus I had not built up high expectations based on preconceived notions.
I have long since settled in my mind that DiCaprio is a fine actor across a broad range of performances and this movie shows once again that he may be the actor of our age. His character is well played and thoroughly developed throughout the film. All of the acting is well done and the scenes are not as hectic as the previews would lead one to believe. I heard one review that the sound track was a little too heavy in some scenes, but I was so engrossed in the story that I did not notice a problem with the sound. I also heard someone compare it to The Matrix, but I didn't see that other than in a couple of minor similarities in a few scenes. I would call it more of a Flatliners meets Mission Impossible with a slight twist of Pulp Fiction.
If you are interested, you can read the plot summary on IMDB, but I recommend that you go into the theater knowing as little as possible. I am glad that I did and I was able to go along for the ride wherever the movie led me. I could tell that by the mannerisms of my wife as we watched the flick that she had emotionally bought into the movie. There were a couple of times where she was startled by something that happened unexpectedly and there were times where she squirmed a bit in anticipation of something that may have or have not happened. When these things happen for her, I know that scenes are well done. I also had a low rate of predicting exactly what would happen, but more importantly, I so enjoyed the story that I didn't care to sit back and predict what was coming.
The story moved at a reasonable pace and kept the plot lines pretty clear. A few things that I wished early on to have known were revealed as the movie progressed. There was only one point where Sue though it was getting a little long, but she was certainly pleased with the way that the story was wrapped up. This movie was easily the best thing I've seen this year, and maybe in a few of the past years. The story is well written and the sense of watching multiple stories with the same actors is really not confusing at all as the director kept crisp barriers between the sequences. I am willing to pay full price to see it again. It was just that good.
