Elisha and the Waters of Jericho

2 Kings 2:19-22 NKJV

19 Then the men of the city said to Elisha, “Please notice, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees; but the water is bad, and the ground barren.”

20 And he said, “Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. 21 Then he went out to the source of the water, and cast in the salt there, and said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘I have healed this water; from it there shall be no more death or barrenness.’” 22 So the water remains healed to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke.

The city is Jericho which had been cursed. It not only represents the world that is under the curse, but it had its own specific curse as well.

Joshua 6:26 NKJV

26 Then Joshua charged them at that time, saying, “Cursed be the man before the Lord who rises up and builds this city Jericho; he shall lay its foundation with his firstborn, and with his youngest he shall set up its gates.”

These curses can only be lifted by God in His plan of salvation. The satanic fortification against the men of God can only be brought to nothing by the mighty hand of the Lord which is not too short to deliver and to redeem. The plans of the enemy are always vain in opposition to the Lord, but unopposed result in barrenness as the ills of man only grow worse.

Let men and women of God stand up and walk in obedience to the call and direction of the King of kings and Lord of lords. In obedience we can stand up to the evil and the curse in unity with Almighty God as we walk in His ways and perform His will.

Our metro city area, our region, and our nation, as well as the whole world, dwells under the curse with the addition of individual curses the area has brought upon itself. Barrenness, both physical and spiritual, has befallen the land, but God is able to deliver and redeem.

The waters represent the Word that needs to go forth unpolluted bringing with it the Fear of the Lord. The clean waters are the Spirit who cleanses and refreshes as it pours out over the land. It is even life itself, which replaces the miscarriage and barrenness.

But as it stands now we have the polluted waters with man’s futile viewpoint of humanism, idolatries and ideologies replacing the Word of God. We see evil spirits and the doctrines of demons in place of Holy Spirit leading all to the righteousness of Christ. There is pollution, weariness, and death where there should be cleansing, refreshment and life.

Elisha was the representative agent of God, as we, the Disciples of Christ, ought to be today. He asked for the double portion of Elijah and received it to do great signs, wonders and miracles. We have Christ in us and the indwelling of Holy Spirit. We are able to do all that He calls us to do by His power within us.

The city was pleasant, but it had a major issue that brought death. The eternal in our area is pleasant; a good place to dwell. The city represents doctrinal things. Some look good and are even pleasant for a season. The curse, however, catches up and brings only death. The bad water brought an unfruitful land. The compromise in the church has brought an unfruitful spiritual land. The falsities, perversions and compromise have polluted the clean water that would purify the Church. This brings the spiritual death and damnation and this needs to be stopped and the souls redeemed.

Elisha – “to whom God is Salvation” – also represents the teaching of the pure Word. This teaching continually brings good out of evil as it displays the truth and the mercies of the Lord over all His works.

Exodus 23:26 NKJV

26 No one shall suffer miscarriage or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days.

26a signifies that goods and truths will proceed in their order in continual progression.

26b signifies even to a full state.

Elisha healed the waters of Jericho that the barren soil might become fruitful again. In our spiritual state, we ask for good soil to be watered by the pure water of the Word to bring about that great spiritual harvest to restore and redeem our land, that none should perish, but that all should receive eternal life.

Elisha asked for a clean bowl. The Disciples of Christ are that purified receptacle and the salt of the world, bringing the flavor of the Word to the salvation and purification of all souls. The salt signifies the affection of the truth. As we spread the salt, we affect all with the truth of the Word through the gospel of salvation in Christ Jesus. The waters are healed by the salt as the falsities are purified by the truth of the Word. The healing comes at the conjoining of the purifying salt with the Disciples of Christ through His power and might that works through us. The teachings of the Word overtake the doctrinal things of the city. Death then gives way to life.

We mere earthen vessels are called to carry the salt that we may season the doctrines of the city with the truth of the Word, thereby bringing transformation. We carry the treasure of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and we are called to salt the world that the power of salvation may be clearly seen, and that is to be seen that it is of God and not of man. Not any jar would do, but the jar, or bowl, the vessel must be new. The new man, the born again believer, is required to understand and follow the call of the Lord. This new man is called to represent the Lord as His ambassador to the world. This lost and cursed world needs the excellency of God and His salvation through Jesus Christ to be declared unto it.

We are being asked of God to declare this miracle of healing to be proclaimed over our land that it may be healed and that souls may come to know the joy of His salvation. It was the authenticity of the life and ministry of Elisha that drew men unto him, as it was with Christ, the Son of God. Should it be any different for believers today? Should it be any different for us today? Should it be any different for me today? Like Elisha, we need to demonstrate that God is real and that He is present. We need to make known the truth that God alone has the answers to the barrenness of the land and of the soul. We need to declare that God alone can bring the fruitfulness and give meaning to life.
